Fire is a core feature of several holidays and traditions that are celebrated around May. For example, the Celtic festival of Beltane, which roughly means “bright fire,” invokes themes of purification, returning light, and both physical and creative fertility. The Jewish holiday Lag BaOmer illuminates similar themes around a community fire, offering an invitation to plant seeds of love and respect for one’s neighbor.
Buddhist and yogic traditions incorporate fire into spiritual practices, physically and metaphorically. The Buddha instructed his son to “make a meditation like fire.” This has been interpreted as a meditative practice that “burns the thoughts and feelings to ash, everything liked and disliked without judgment or resistance.” As these objects disappear, they leave space to deepen awareness, move inward, and cultivate seeds of wholesome qualities, like compassion and equanimity.
Release, death, and destruction are transformed into the renewal of our commitments to our truest selves, deepest passions, and fullest potential. To complete the circle, the ash from our fire over the course of the night will fertilize the farm’s soil to help the plants and fungi to thrive.
During this community gathering, we will explore these themes through guided meditation, movement, writing, burning objects, song, and play! Join us in exploring this seasonal transition from spring to summer with curiosity, care, and community. How will you transform this season?
